Choosing the Right Font for a Creative Brand: My Experience with Cunning
I was working on a new coaching website for a wellness entrepreneur who wanted to convey both warmth and professionalism. The client had a clear vision—modern, approachable, and visually engaging. I needed a font that could balance creativity with readability while still maintaining a strong brand identity.
The Search for the Perfect Typeface
After testing several fonts, I came across Cunning. It immediately caught my eye with its unique blend of decorative uppercase letters and a handwritten lowercase script. The star embellishments added a playful touch, which aligned well with the client’s branding goals. But I wasn’t just looking for something visually appealing—I needed a font that would work across different screen sizes and layouts without sacrificing clarity.
Testing Cunning in Real Layouts
I started by placing Cunning in the hero section of the site. The bold uppercase letters stood out against a soft gradient background, drawing attention to the headline. I paired it with a clean sans-serif font for the body text, ensuring a good contrast and maintaining visual hierarchy. The result was a balanced mix of personality and professionalism.
Next, I tested how Cunning performed on mobile devices. On smaller screens, the decorative elements didn’t overwhelm the layout, and the script remained legible even at smaller sizes. This was a relief because readability is crucial for user engagement, especially on mobile-first designs.
Using Cunning in Different Sections
Cunning proved versatile beyond just the hero section. I used it for call-to-action buttons, where the playful script made the text feel more inviting. For section headings, the uppercase design helped create a sense of structure and focus. I also experimented with using the font as a decorative accent in blog headers and promotional banners, adding a subtle yet effective visual flair.
One of my favorite uses was for the logo text. The combination of uppercase and lowercase styles allowed for a dynamic and memorable brand mark. It felt personal and authentic, which was exactly what the client wanted.
Font Pairing and Readability
When pairing Cunning with other fonts, I focused on contrast and balance. I used a simple sans-serif font like Montserrat for body copy, which complemented the decorative style of Cunning without clashing. This pairing worked well for both editorial and promotional content, allowing the brand to maintain a cohesive look while still being visually interesting.
I also paid close attention to how Cunning looked on different backgrounds. Light and dark modes required careful adjustments to ensure legibility. On dark backgrounds, I increased the contrast slightly, while on light backgrounds, I kept the text color consistent to maintain a clean aesthetic.
Considering Commercial Use and Licensing
Before finalizing the font choice, I checked the licensing details. Cunning comes with commercial use rights, which was important for a client planning to launch an online store and marketing assets. I also verified the file formats and webfont availability, making sure it would work seamlessly across all platforms and devices.
Another consideration was multilingual support. Since the client planned to expand their audience, I confirmed that Cunning supported multiple languages, which was a valuable asset for future growth.
Building a Polished Online Presence
By integrating Cunning into the design, I helped the client build a more polished and professional online presence. The font’s unique style added character to the brand without overwhelming the user experience. It created a sense of trust and authenticity, which is essential for a coaching business.
Overall, Cunning has been a great addition to my design toolkit. Its versatility, readability, and visual appeal make it suitable for a wide range of digital projects—from portfolio sites to product landing pages. Whether you’re designing a creative portfolio or a boutique online store, Cunning can help elevate your brand’s visual identity with a touch of elegance and playfulness.
